It was obvious when I first read this client’s pre-session questionnaire that I was in for a special treat!
Photography isn’t only about special occasions, and this client made me realize a photo session can be spontaneous, unplanned, and natural.

These two plus their adorable Shih Tzu puppy, Pepsi, were a dream to photograph.
They love fashion, photography, and the camera couldn’t agree more with capturing their true beauty & love for one another.
Even though Pepsi was full of energy, he sported that bow-tie in puppy style.

Enjoy!

Getting quality family photos are so, so important and what’s even better is to be able to decorate your walls and see your kids grow through the years.   Unfortunately when you are the photographer in the family you rarely get to be in any of the photos.  It’s actually been over a year since we have had our family photographed professionally.   Yes, I have tons of beautiful images of my Josie on my walls, but have been lacking in the family department.  Guilty, I know!  I want those meaningful images of me with my husband and Josie so bad, and it is not something I can do from my usual side of the camera.  Those pictures are so, so very important and that is why Stephanie, from Lemonade Stand Photography, and I decided to swap family sessions this fall.

It’s important to know that Stephanie and I started our businesses around the same time in the northwest suburbs.  This made us instant competitors.  Instead of getting wrapped up in constantly comparing our styles and pricing we have developed a strong friendship.  It is so refreshing to have her continuous support and has been even more fun to have each other photograph our families.  We are very similar in so many ways but definitely have developed our own ways of working and style to make for a unique experience.

I simply want to thank Stephanie and all the families I photograph for trusting me to be the one to work for you.  Check out her amazing and beautiful family!

Aren’t they the most adorable family of five!?!!?!  I probably enjoyed this session a little too much, as I wanted to edit every image I took.

Ok, this is the part where I tell you what it was like for me to be out of my comfort zone.  Little did I recall the amount of stress and over analyzing that goes into preparing for a family session.  I’ve gotten so used to just showing up to meet my clients all giddy to be taking their pictures.   Wow, was it a reality check to be on the other side.  First, was the challenge of coordinating outfits.  Ok, I secretly loved that part because I got to spend way too much money, but it was tough work coordinating not matching!  I think I went to 10 different stores before I got just what I was looking for.  Next, was trying to figure out how to do my hair and make-up.   I’ll let you in on a little secret.  I have thick unruly hair that takes way too long to straighten, and I am clueless in the make-up department.   Thankfully I called my friend, Mallory, to come rescue me at my house.  Gosh, she is oh-so talented and she dolled me right up!  Seriously, this was the best idea I think I’ve ever had.  So good…that I might just be in the works with Mallory to include a hair & make up session package!  Get excited, because it was a huge stress and time saver.  {You’ve got to visit Mallory at Swerve Salon if you live near Chicago. She’s amazing!}  Finally, the nerves of posing naturally, making sure Josie was behaving, and just praying that we were going to get the pictures I was dreaming or “pinning” in my mind.  Who knew I would be such a Nervous-Nelly after photographing so many families!?!?  I mean I knew exactly what to expect, but man, do I give you all so much credit because it truly is harder being on the other side of the camera!!!!  However, Stephanie eased all my anxieties and made the entire experience so much fun and truly captured my little family at our best.  I can’t wait to get these family memories hung on our walls!
